Although Vinicius had established his public figure through poetry and popular song, he was one of the greatest prose writers of his generation. As a matter of fact, a generation where the good prose of that time was crystallized through a chronic genre extremely characterized by the style of Rio de Janeiro city.
With a large number of newspapers that circulated in the city and with a team of writers which would vary from Rubem Braga to Carlinhos de Oliveira, from Carlos Drummond de Andrade to Clarice Lispector, from Fernando Sabino to Nelson Rodrigues, Vinicius sit among them as a chronicler who transmitted to the prose, the same reasons and the same lightness of style that he presented to the public in his poems.
BLUES PARA EMMETT LOUIS TILL
(O negrinho americano que ousou assoviar para uma mulher branca)
Os assassinos de Emmett
— Poor Mamma Till!
Chegaram sem avisar
— Poor Mamma Till!
Mascando cacos de vidro
— Poor Mamma Till!
Com suas caras de cal.
Os assassinos de Emmett
— Poor Mamma Till!
Entraram sem dizer nada
— Poor Mamma Till!
Com seu hálito de couro
— Poor Mamma Till!
E seus olhos de punhal.
— I hate to see that evenin’sun go down...
Os assassinos de Emmett
— Poor Mamma Till!
Quando o viram ajoelhado
— Poor Mamma Till!
Descarregaram-lhe em cima
— Poor Mamma Till!
O fogo de suas armas.
Enquanto contendo o orgasmo
— Poor Mamma Till!
A mulher faz um guisado
— Poor Mamma Till!
Para esperar o marido
— Poor Mamma Till!
Que a seu mando foi vingá-la.
— O how I hate to see that evenin’sun go down...
