Cinco elegias (Five elegies)
Rio de Janeiro, Pongetti, 1943
After writing four books in five years, Vinicius does the reverse: he rests five years without publishing. During this period, his life undergoes a series of intense changes. Amongst them, the main one: he marries Beatriz Azevedo de Mello, Tati, his first wife. After a brief season in England to study literature, he lives in Gávea, and in 1940, he has his first daughter, Susana. Then he moves to Leblon and embarks in his diplomatic career in 1942.
The year of 1942 was a decisive one in Vinicius’s life. That's when he meets other social realities in Rio and Brazil along with the American writer Waldo Frank. Another remarkable trip was the one to Minas Gerais, during which he creates eternal ties with the State and makes friends with, for instance, Otto Lara Resende, Paulo Mendes Campos, Fernando Sabino and Hélio Pellegrino. It is also when he has first impulse to begin conceiving what years later would be the play “Orfeu da Conceição” (Orpheus of the Conception). Vinicius was already a mature married man, and worked for the press in Rio, writing mainly about cinema.
Thus, his book Five Elegies is the result of that moment in which Vinicius ends a life cycle, connected to the Catholic youth and a careful poetic, to inaugurate another, connected to the street life, the scattered loves and an intense intellectual activity – whether in books and newspapers, whether in bars where the elite of the arts, the Brazilian ant the carioca’s thought of that time gathered together.
Another point for us to see this aspect of control and resilience of the book, beyond the formal boldness and experimentation with the poetic language that we can find in many of his poems, is the union of his past with his present. The volume, made with the help of friends like Manuel Bandeira and Aníbal Machado - is dedicated to Octavio de Faria, Mario Vieira de Mello and José Arthur da Frota Moreira, friends of youth, those who took him into poetry. Five Elegies closes a period of Vinicius, publishing poems that were written or started in 1937 and six years later take shape in the book.

Dessas cinco elegias, as quatro primeiras foram ideadas e em parte escritas - a primeira e a segunda integralmente - em 1937, em Itatiaia, no sítio de Octávio de Faria, ali a meio caminho entre Campo Belo e a Cachoeira de Marombas, lugar que amo e onde passei alguns dos meus melhores dias. Nesse tempo, a terceira, essa que aqui vai com o título de "Desesperada", era para ser na realidade a quarta; em substituição havia outra; que se deveria chamar "Intermédio elegíaco" e afinal se transformou num drama lírico, com que ainda hoje ando lidando. Iniciada nessa ocasião, só fui terminá-la em fins de 1938, em Oxford, quando, estudante, ali assisti. A atual quarta foi a única que me perseguiu, inacabada, ao longo de todos esses anos. Há coisa de um mês, de repente, resolveu-se.
Quanto à última, escrevi-a de jato, naquele maio de 1939, em Londres, vendo, do meu apartamento, a manhã nascer sobre os telhados novos do bairro de Chelsea. A qualidade da experiência vivida e o lugar onde a vivi criaram-lhe espontaneamente a linguagem em que se formou, mistura de português e inglês, com vocábulos muitas vezes inventados e sem chave morfológica possível. Mas não houve sombra de vontade de parecer original. É uma fala de amor como a falei, virtualmente transposta para a poesia, na qual procurei traduzir, dentro de sonoridades estanques de duas línguas que me são tão caras e com arranjos gráficos e ordem puramente mnemônica, isso que foi a maior aventura lírica da minha vida.
